Mental Health Awareness & Recreational Running
Breathing & Mindfulness: 7/5/25 to 8/2/25 @ Salgado Center
Recreational Running: 8/12/25 to 9/25/25 @ Jerome Center
Lightning is open to the whole community and offers the opportunity to train with the running program regardless of age or running level. Running is for everyone and should be fun and enjoyable, especially for youth. We have runners who start by becoming walkers, then move into joggers, competitive runners, and elite runners. Developing a youth runner is a mental, physical, and developmental growth process.
In most cases, recreational runners train on selected days that are not intensive. We work with the city of Santa Ana Parks and Recreation to teach basic running skills and provide mental health methods such as breathing, guided imagery, and other techniques.
Lightning also offers sessions for mental health awareness for youth athletes. Youth athletes learned methods of mindfulness and breathing exercises to help manage symptoms of anxiety, worry and overanalyzing through calming and progressive muscle exercises.
