Mental Performance Coaching at the

2026 Track & Sports Mental Performance Camp

June 30th to July 3, 2026

At Lightning Youth Academy camps, mental performance coaching is a core component of athlete development. We teach young athletes practical, age-appropriate psychological skills that improve focus, confidence, emotional intelligence and consistency on and off the track. Our approach blends sports psychology principles with hands-on training, giving youth athletes tools they can use immediately and throughout their athletic journeys.

Lightning Youth Academy’s mental performance coaching equips young athletes with lifelong skills for sport and life. Whether developing a pre-race/game routine, setting progressive goals, or learning to bounce back from a tough race or game, our camp prepares athletes to succeed with resilience, confidence, and purpose.

What to Expect

    • Understanding the mind-body connection: We teach athletes how thoughts, emotions, and physical responses interact during training and competition. Awareness helps athletes control pre-race nerves and perform under pressure.

    • Attention and focus training: Exercises and drills strengthen concentration, helping athletes maintain race plans and block out distractions such as crowds, weather, or negative self-talk.

    • Arousal regulation: Coaches guide athletes in recognizing their optimal arousal level for peak performance and provide strategies—breathing, imagery, progressive muscle relaxation—to reach and sustain it.

    • Performance routines: We help athletes design pre-training and pre-race routines that cue the body and mind for consistent performance.

    • Growth mindset – Athletes learn that improvement comes from effort, practice, and learning from mistakes.

    • Positive self-talk – Replacing doubt with confident, focused thoughts during training and competition.

    • Focus & discipline – Staying present in workouts, races, and long-term goals.

    • Resilience – Bouncing back from setbacks, injuries, or tough performances.

    • Confidence building – Trusting preparation and believing in personal ability under pressure.

    • Self-awareness – Athletes learn to recognize their emotions before, during, and after competition.

    • Self-control – Helps Atheltes manage nerves, frustration, and pressure in races and training.

    • Motivation – Builds internal drive and resilience to keep improving through challenges.

    • Empathy – Encourages teamwork, respect for coaches, and support for teammates.

    • Decision-making under pressure – Improves focus and smarter choices during competition.

    • Normalizing setbacks: We teach that setbacks, mistakes, and losses are opportunities for learning—not reflections of worth—so athletes bounce back faster.

    • Coping strategies: Athletes practice problem-solving, emotional regulation, and self-calming techniques to manage disappointment and maintain motivation.

    • Growth mindset training: Emphasis on effort, strategy, and learning helps athletes view challenges as the path to improvement rather than fixed failures.

    • Recovery and balance: Resilience includes knowing when to rest. We promote healthy routines—sleep, nutrition, social support—that aid physical and mental recovery.

    • SMART goals adapted for youth: We guide athletes to set Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound goals appropriate to their age and development.

    • Short-term process goals + long-term outcome goals: Camps focus on process goals (technique, effort, consistency) that lead to long-term performance outcomes without creating undue pressure.

    • Action plans and checkpoints: Each athlete builds a clear plan with small, trackable steps and regular review points to monitor progress and adjust as needed.

    • Accountability and celebration: Coaches and peers provide constructive feedback and celebrate milestones to maintain motivation and reinforce progress.

    • Safe, developmentally appropriate environment: Mental performance coaching is tailored to each age group and delivered in a supportive, nonjudgmental setting.

    • Parent and coach education: We offer guidance for parents and club coaches so they reinforce positive mental skills at home and during regular training.

    • Holistic athlete care: Mental skills are taught alongside physical training, nutrition basics, and time-management strategies to support the whole athlete.

    • Accessibility and inclusion: Coaching is offered to athletes of varying ability levels and backgrounds, with emphasis on equity and building confidence for all participants.
